Master Some Simple Chords

Start off by mastering some simple chords like the A7 which is as simple as the following:

This is a great chord because you can quickly transition from this position into playing the D7 Chord which looks look like the following:

By transitioning between these two chords and using licks on the first and second string down near the 5th and 8th fret, you can create a simple, yet enjoyable sound. Alternate between the three and you’ll have a great deal of different sounds at your disposal that are perfectly suited for guitar improvisation.

The lick itself is from the A-minor pentatonic scale and can be extended if you like to include notes on the second, third and fourth strings using the fifth, seventh and eighth frets.

Mastering Guitar Improvisation Through Scales and Chords

The above example is but one of many different ways in which you can start combining multiple different things into a single sound that works well together. This is the key to guitar improvisation and it comes from understanding how different notes work together in a sequence. Scales are the basis for all sequences and while learning you basic C scale is important, there are dozens of scales that can help you improvise new songs from scratch.

The best way for guitar improvisation to work for you is to pick up different combinations of scales and the chords that go with them. When you match them up as we did in the above example, you’ll learn how to start playing the guitar naturally without any music at all. These different sounds complement each other perfectly and are what even the best guitar players in the world use as the basis for their songs. It might seem a bit too simple (and it can be much more complex when you start discussing harder scales and chords), but you’ll quickly learn how each note and scale interacts as you pick up the basics of guitar improvisation.
