The Basics of How to Play Guitar by Ear

The basics are very simple really. You just listen to a song and pick out the notes and chords. Of course, the application is never as simple as it sounds. It can be incredibly frustrating to try and get the right notes when you have not yet mastered them all.

So, the first step is going to be to memorize the different chords and notes and the best way to do this is to play them. You should practice constantly and know all of the notes from one end of the guitar to the other, with a smattering of chords that might appear in a song. The more you know and the more easily you can play a song just by knowing what the notes should be, the easier it will be to know what notes and chords you are hearing when playing a guitar by ear.

Of course, just knowing them isn’t that hard – there are shortcuts that help narrow down the chords and pick them apart more easily. For example, the major chords are all full and happy sounding while minor chords are darker with a melancholy, sad tone.

Mastering the Fretboard

You should also know the fretboard intimately before learning how to play guitar by ear. If you cannot hear the difference between an F and an E, you need to spend a bit more time practicing and listening for the distinctly different notes on each fret. You’ll need to be able to quickly translate what you hear to the fret board when learning how to play guitar by ear so that the sounds don’t mean something abstract in your mind, but are a specific action to your fingers – one you can perform automatically.
