 Team Method Guitar Review

The internet has a great deal to offer to the modern guitar student. Numerous downloadable guitar courses are available from various websites, all claiming to be the best way of learning the guitar. Team Method Guitar is one such course. It’s certainly not one of the cheapest available, so is its relatively high price justified by its content? Let’s take a look.

What is Team Method Guitar? Well, it’s basically a downloadable guitar course aimed at beginners and intermediate players who are serious about their playing, and want to take things to the next level. It takes the form of several ebooks covering a range of topics including rhythm playing, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, and ear training and theory.

The course draws on the expertise of a ‘team’ of professionals, hence the name, who are specialists in different areas to give you a thorough education in all aspects of guitar playing. The lessons in the ebooks are accompanied by audio and video to enhance the learning process, and make it easier to pick up what is being taught. The course also contains additional software tools to improve your music notation and aural perception skills.

What do you get in the package? Well, you certainly get a lot for your money. The main course comprises of three ebooks, labelled Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The first two books focus on rhythm playing, while the third book teaches lead guitar, including advanced techniques such as hammer-ons and pull-offs, string bending, and tapping. With over 360 pages of lessons these books contain enough information to keep you busy for a very long time, and almost every exercise comes with a video demonstrating how it should be played.

As well as the main books, you also get a book about acoustic guitar playing, a book about how to tune your guitar, another called ‘Advanced Learning Methods’, and a 72 page chord book containing 216 chord variations. The course includes 29 jam tracks for you to play along to, and a 'learn by ear' mini course to help you learn songs just by hearing them. You also get the following software tools: Jayde Musica, a great little game that helps improve your music reading, GuitEarIt!, another game, this time that trains you to recognise chord progressions by ear, Guitar Tuner Pro, to keep your guitar in tune, and a metronome to keep your timing in check.

Working through the course is pretty straight forward. Unlike some other courses available, Team Method Guitar doesn’t include a central software interface to access lessons from, so you have to manually open the ebooks, in PDF format, and then locate and open the relevant audio or video file when required. This can be a little cumbersome – it would have been nice to have had a software interface – but this certainly doesn’t detract from the actual value of the course content. The lessons themselves are well thought out and well structured, getting progressively harder as you work your way through the course. The ear training and notation reading software that are included are also very easy to use.

The big question with a system like this is ‘is it actually good at teaching?’ The answer in this case is definitely yes. The fact that each module of the course is written by a different expert means that it’s much more thorough and complete than most other courses – it really does cover all the bases. The video lessons included are a huge benefit, enabling you to actually see what is being taught rather than just reading it, which vastly reduces learning time and makes it easier to ensure you’re doing things right. The jam tracks add another dimension to the course by giving you a chance to incorporate what you’ve learned into a real musical context, as well as letting you experience what it’s like to play with a band. Combine all that with the theory you’ll learn, as well as the ear training and notation reading training you get, and, if you’re willing to put the work in, you’ll become a very competent guitarist following this course.

So, all in all, this is a very good product; it offers one of the most complete guitar learning programs I’ve seen anywhere. It is a bit more expensive than some of the alternatives but, if you’re serious about learning the guitar then this is definitely worth a look.
